Why a VPN

Take a few momens to consider the ammount of data you transmit through internet. Be assured that each byte of these data are carefully stored and processed by companies you trust in order to create your internet profile and the problem goes beyond advertising and sales. What actual happening is social engineering, it's the greatest threat to freedom since the Nazis.

Each internet user exposes sensitive information about its health, financial status, political views, sexual orientation and the list can go forever.

The first and most important action to protect your privacy is to use a vpn. What a vpn does is hidding your real ip and encrypt the data between your machine and their server, that way your isp cannot track your internet traffic also big data companies and goverment agencies cannot track you and create a user profile. Ofcourse there are few more steps a user needs to take if strong privacy needed or extreme anonymity but the first and most important is to use a vpn provider.

How to choose a VPN

A list of what to consider when choosing a vpn provider :

1. Company country base
It's important because different countries have differnet laws about keeping logs and privacy. Avoid 14 eyes countries if goverment agencies are a great concern for you.

2. Log policy
The ammount of information, if any ,the vpn provider stores(log files) about you. This is in direct relation with the country based company aspect described above.

3. P2P traffic
Some vpn providers allow and some do not allow p2p traffic. Also some providers allow p2p traffic from certain server locations and forbid from other locations. P2P traffic is important and you should carefully examine each provider about it.

4. Connected devices
There is a number of devices you can connect for each account and this is important. Most of people use more than one device to connect to the internet and its good to be able to use a vpn to more than one device.

5. Plarforms supporting
Although nearly all vpn providers support all os (mac, windows, ios, android etc) platforms its good to check it before subscribing.

6. Refund policy
It's always better to test any service before you buy. Most vpn providers have a refund period and this may vary among providers its advisable to chek it before you choose. Make use of it if you are not happy with the service.

7. Additional information like
Encyption protocols, kill switch and dns leak protection, payment methods and support level are things to considerwhen choosing a vpn.

Our VPN Provider Criteria

  • Operating outside the USA, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand ( Five Eyes countries )
  • Accepts Bitcoin, cash, debit cards or cash cards as a payment method.
  • OpenVPN software support.
  • No personal information is required to create an account, except username, password and email.

Protocols

  • OpenVPN : is the most popular , open source application being used to establish VPN connections , faster than PPTP and L2TP/IPSec. OpenSSL is a feature of OpenVPN , it provides support for a variety of encryption algorithms including AES , Blowfish , 3DES and more , supports up to 256 bit session keys , can be hard to configure without configuration files.
  • PPTP ( point-to-point ) : simple and fast , not the most secure option , supports 128-bit encryption keys , the quickest and simplest setup for users who do not have much concern over security and reliability.
  • L2TP/IPSec ( Layer 2 Tunnel Protocol ) : slower when compared with PPTP and OpenVPN , easy to install and configure , documents leaked by Edward Snowden has given us some disturbing hints that serious efforts were made to crack it , supports up to 256 bit session keys , available on every major platform.
  • IKEv2/IPSec : The most advanced and newest VPN protocol , is also protected by IPsec , IPsec secures the tunnel between the client and server using the strong AES256 encryption , very stable has the ability to reconnect when an internet connection is interrupted.
  • Chameleon : VPN traffic blocked by governments, corporations and ISPs worldwide . This is particularly an issue in countries like China and Iran that actively restrict internet freedoms . Golden Frog's engineers have developed a new , proprietary VPN technology called Chameleon that is available in the VyprVPN apps for Windows, Mac and Android . Chameleon is great for VPN users being blocked in countries such as China, Russia, Iran, Thailand and Syria.

VPN Speed

  • The location of the server (physical distance) : This is one of the most common factors that affect VPN speed , use the closest server to you , check for a vpn server in your country if not available try to connect to a vpn server in your region ( example : if you are living in France look for a vpn server in Europe etc. )
  • Encryption strength : A more secure encryption level means slower VPN speed , PPTP is a low security but fast speed protocol , OpenVPN protocol is the best solution for secure and fast connections.
  • VPN server load : Number of people using the same VPN server ( more people less speed ).
  • Normal connection Speed : Regardless of how fast a VPN service is , it will be restricted by the connection speed that you use to access the VPN server .
  • Routing : The way a VPN provider routes a connection between multiple servers within a similar physical location can have a significant effect.
  • Home network : Use a wired connection from your device can increase your internet speed.
As you can easy understand VPN speed it depends from many factors different in each case , individual tests that you can find on many websites are useless.
